FLYLEAF Singer On Being A Female Fronting A Christian Rock Band
October 4, 2010In a recent interview with The Dallas Morning News, FLYLEAF singer Lacey Sturm (previously known by her maiden name of Lacey Nicole Mosley) was asked about the frequently raised question of whether FLYLEAF is a Christian rock band.
"You have to know what you're really asking," Sturm said. "What people want to really know is, are they Christian? I would want to know if they are Christian. When I read somebody's lyrics and they connect with my faith, are they Christian? We are all Christians in our band, and it comes out in our music. We want to be honest. There is sometimes an animosity for Christianity. It's awful that they would judge us based on what they hear and not the music."
Even though rock music isn't as dominated by men as it had been in prior decades, Sturm said getting respect as a woman fronting a rock band isn't as easy as it should be. "It still is an issue," she said. "The rock stations didn't want to play a rock band that was female-fronted. We wanted them to put it on and let the people decide. People loved it. Look at it on the basis of I'm a musician and it's real, not on the basis of being a woman in a rock band."
